The Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) invites you to attend the International Workshop on Accelerator R&D for Ultimate Storage Rings (USRs) in Huairou, Beijing, China, from October 30 to November 1, 2012. Storage ring-based light sources will continue to play a vital role in X-ray science into the future since the beam properties they offer are complementary to FEL sources. There are now emerging scientific applications and experimental methods that would greatly benefit from the ring-based sources having much higher brightness and transverse coherence than present or near-future storage ring facilities,i.e., storage rings having electron emittance smaller than 100 pm-rad in both transverse planes and on the scale of the diffraction limited emittance for hard X-rays. Several institutions world-wide are now drafting the prospect of building diffraction-limited “ultimate” storage rings (USRs) in their 10-year development plans. While presenting many significant challenges that must be addressed with R&D, these machines also push the state of the art for storage ring accelerator and photon beam line design.In the workshop the participants will survey conceptual designs, compare the performance goals for USRs worldwide, and identify technical challenges and R&D requirements.Working sessions will be devoted to Lattice design, Accelerator physics, Injection, Accelerator engineering, IDs and wigglers.
